Compilation of internationally renowned press regarding this project (and highlighting the impact of the oversized Stella VUE Sliding Doors)

These are galleries that highlight the art rather than rivalling it. This is a gallery with no permanent collection so it has to work hard to produce its own identity – something the architecture helps it achieve.

Central to the second level is the event/education gallery, a multi-functional location for public and private functions, catered banquets, performances, lectures, workshops, meetings and educational outreach.
Its entire southern wall is an operable glazed panorama overlooking Burrard Inlet and Vancouver. with an adjacent outdoor terrace.

Nowhere was the gallery’s intensity of focus more obvious, however, than on the outer decking upstairs. In a flourish that distinguishes the Polygon from older-style art venues (such as the existing Vancouver Art Gallery), the exhibition space extends through glass doors to a wide south-facing deck that provides a sweeping view of downtown Vancouver.
For a gallery, this is oddly anti-contemplative, drawing the eye away from the artwork and out toward the shining city view.

This project as described by Architects – Patkau Architects – The Polygon Gallery is the rebirth of Presentation House Gallery, which has been a passionately independent photography and media institution in North Vancouver for more than forty years. More site-maker than site response, the building stands at the front of urban waterfront renewal where infrastructure is reimagined and culture outgrows an industrial past. The Gallery asserts its significance in the social and cultural life of North Vancouver, striking a figure of dauntless rejuvenation.
