All-glass 6-storey atrium creates collaboration and connectivity

University of Ottawa - Learning Crossroads - CRX

As the largest French-English bilingual university in the world, part of the University of Ottawa’s mission is to bring together cultures, languages, and diverse perspectives. In this new building, the Learning Crossroads or CRX for short, brings together modern teaching methods and advanced multimedia technologies for students and fosters connectivity and flexibilty through design.

This connectivity is seen with the central atrium that connects all six above-ground storeys together. The all-glass guards offer much transparency throughout the space and allow for the infusion of natural light.

Stella was a key collaborator in this open design. Our adjustable ST503 stand-offs support the glass guards and do double duty by supporting a transparent smoke baffle extending beneath each floor. The +/- 6mm adjustability was appreciated by the glaziers in situations where the mounting surface was uneven and needed a minor adjustment.

Our clean BA382 handrails (appropriately named the “Tech” for this space) are tested to guardloads and support the railing in various locations.

On the upper floors where there is a full-height glass wall acting as a guard, our PC2110 perimeter channel placed at the top and bottom of the glass wall offers an easy-to-install dry-glazed channel for glass support.

Our Posiglaze system was also used as a frameless base shoe on the glass entrance ramp (not shown in photos).
