YMCA - Toronto Central Grosvenor Street "Glass Box"

Recipient of the prestigious 2018 Prix du XXe siècle – in recognition of enduring excellence and significance to Canada’s architectural legacy as awarded by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the National Trust for Canada.

A popular Y location located in the heart of Toronto had a contemporary “facelift” courtesy of Diamond Schmitt Architects.

This renovation added a glass box on the south exterior while honouring the original design intent of the facility. This “glass box” was made possible with Stella’s glass fin support which created high visibility into the new addition.

As part of Stella’s “whole wall” involvement with collaboration from early design days including our involvement with the engineering and design, the glass specification on this 10m high wall was able to stay at a cost-effective 12mm thick versus a much thicker single-glazed glass that was originally proposed.
